The rules of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) are likely to be notified soon, News18 reported citing government sources.

The Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 seeks to fast-track citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim undocumented migrants from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

The legislation has been ineffective since its passage in Parliament four years ago as the government had so far sought eight extension to frame the CAA rules.

According to the News18 report, the government is likely to notify the CAA rules soon. Following the notification of rules, the national census will taken, and then the process of delimitation will begin with the government forming a delimitation commission.

It should be noted that the next delimitation exercise is scheduled to be held before 2027.

Earlier last month, the Union Home Ministry had last month sought yet another extension to frame the rules of CAA.

The ministry had written to the parliament committee on subordinate legislation in the Lok Sabha, seeking time till end of September to frame CAA rules.

This was the eighth extension sought by the government.

The last such request was made by the MHA in January to extend the deadline till 30 June.
