Prime Minister Narendra Modi, without naming Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, voiced his disapproval of "indecent language" used by a "prominent leader of I.N.D.I. Alliance" in the assembly.
The Prime Minister decried the lack of condemnation from I.N.D.I Alliance leaders and questioned their conduct during a public address in Madhya Pradesh's Guna, as reported by NDTV.
"A leader who is carrying the flag of I.N.D.I. Alliance used an unimaginable language, talked dirty. He doesn't have any shame. No other leader of I.N.D.I. Alliance spoke a single word against him. Can such people uplift women? How low will you stoop," he said.
Multiple Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders have also criticised Nitish Kumar for his comments about women's education and population control, calling them 'vulgar'.
The BJP has urged Bihar's voters to remember Nitish Kumar's remarks in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha election.
The party, seeking to capitalise on the situation, has demanded Nitish Kumar's resignation and attacked I.N.D.I. Alliance leaders, including former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.
Union Minister Nityanand Rai accused Nitish Kumar of losing "mental stability" and criticised his deputy, Tejashwi Yadav, for defending the statement.
BJP leaders from different states, including Tamil Nadu and southern regions also condemned Nitish Kumar's remarks and called for his apology.
Nitish Kumar made the controversial remark during a debate on the caste survey, where his government proposed raising quotas for various groups.
While Nitish Kumar later expressed regret on his words, his comments have ignited a storm of criticism and demands for accountability.
