The Chief Justice of India, in an event organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association, shared his plans to bring in more transparency in the collegium appointment procedure. He highlighted that he has ensured that detailed reasons are given in the collegium resolutions for appointment of judges.

He also shared that he has directed the Research Wing of the Supreme Court to assist the Collegium for bringing in more objectivity in the decision-making of the collegium.

He said he has asked the research wing to collect data on top fifty judges of the High Court in terms of their seniority, relating to the number of orders passed by them and number of reportable judgments delivered, among others.

The CJI also heighted that this was never done before and it would promote a sense of objectivity in the work of the collegium.

He said that the Centre for Research and Planning that is the research wing of the Supreme Court has some extraordinarily talented young pool, including a judicial officer and one of his former law clerks, among others.

As rightly said by the CJI, this move would go a long way in bringing transparency and objectivity to the rather opaque collegium appointment procedure presently existing.
