The Gujarat cabinet has approved the formation of a committee to implement Uniform Civil Code in the state, says state Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi.
Earlier in July, the union government said it does not propose to set up a committee to implement a uniform civil code (UCC) and added that it has asked the Law Commission to examine various issues on the matter and make recommendations.
In the same month however, a five-member committee formed to implement the Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand held its first meeting in New Delhi on 4 July.
Gujarat is to vote for a new Assembly in late November/early December.

The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
