The Uttar Pradesh Assembly witnessed light-hearted banter as Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's comments directed at Samajwadi Party leader Shivpal Yadav, uncle of Akhilesh Yadav, elicited a witty rebuttal, leaving the entire house in splits.

At the start of his speech, Adityanath congratulated Samajwadi Party veteran Mata Prasad Pandey, who has taken over as leader of the opposition after Akhilesh Yadav was elected to the Lok Sabha from Kannauj in the recent general election.

Addressing Pandey, the CM said, "You have twice served as the speaker of this house. I congratulate you on your selection. It's a different matter that you tricked chacha (uncle)."

"Chacha always gets tricked like this. This is his destiny because the nephew is always scared," he added, with Shivpal Yadav seen smiling.

When it was his turn to speak, Shivpal Yadav responded, "I was not tricked, Pandey ji is very senior."

Turning to the treasury benches, he remarked, "I was in touch with you for three years. You tricked me too," prompting laughter from MLAs, including the Chief Minister.

"You tricked me, you lagged in this election, and the Samajwadi Party surged ahead. Mark my words, the Samajwadi Party will come to power in the 2027 state polls, and your deputy Chief Minister will trick you," he further stated.

His comments came amid tensions within the state BJP with rumours floating about an alleged rift between Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya and the Chief Minister.

Around 2017, as Akhilesh Yadav began taking charge of the Samajwadi Party, Shivpal Yadav left the party to form the Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party. However, in 2022, Shivpal Yadav reconciled with his nephew Akhilesh, rejoined the Samajwadi Party, and merged his party with it.
