Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president K Annamalai today (31 October) stated that two of the party's functionaries and a number of government officials were assaulted by goons connected to the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in the Perambalur District Collectorate.

He said that the party functionaries, i.e, Perambalur Kavulpalayam Panchayat Council President and Industrial Division District Vice President Kalaichelvan and Industrial Division District President Murugesan had gone to submit a bid for an auction of stone quarries in the district yesterday (30 October), when they were assaulted.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he stated, "The DMK mob stopped and assaulted Perambalur Kavulpalayam Panchayat Council President and Industrial Division District Vice President Kalaichelvan and Industrial Division District President Murugesan who had come to bid for the quarries in Perambalur district.

"Also, the Deputy Director of Mineral Resources Jayapal and Assistant Geologist Ilangovan, Revenue Inspector Kumari Anandan and DSP Mr. Palanichamy and other police officers were also attacked. Even after the district collector came directly and issued a warning, the DMK rowdy gang did not disperse from there and continued to engage in riots. They also attacked journalists there.

“Law and order in Tamil Nadu is already so bad that a village administrative officer was hacked to death in his office. Now the DMK has created an unsafe situation for the government officials in the district collector’s office itself. If these DMK goons are not bound by the orders of a District Collector, imagine what they would do to the common people."

Political commentator Savukku Shankar stated that the men who carried out the assault were connected to Transport minister SS Sivasankar. He also stated that the Superintendent of Police (SP) should be suspended for dereliction of duty.

In another post, he said that Sivasankar's PA Mahendran personally led the attack.

The District Collector later announced a temporary suspension of the auction due to administrative reasons, reported The Hindu.
