The Tamil Nadu Assembly today (9 October) passed a resolution urging the central government to direct the Karnataka government to release water to Tamil Nadu as per the directions of the Supreme Court.
The resolution was passed unanimously after the MLAs of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) walked out. The BJP demanded changes in the resolution.
According to a report by news agency PTI, Leader of Opposition Edappadi Palaniswami (EPS) of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) recalled the efforts taken by his party to solve the issue when it was in power.
The amendments sought by the BJP included nationalisation of rivers and support to the Dam Safety Bill brought by the Centre, stated the report.
On 29 September, the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) had ordered the Karnataka government to release 3000 cusecs of water per day to Tamil Nadu till 15 October.
