Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), through its official As-Sahab Media, has released a 12-page statement from its leader, Osama Mahmood.
In the message, Mahmood congratulates the people of Bangladesh for what he describes as the overthrow of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government, framing it as a significant victory for Islamists and jihadists in the region.
The AQIS chief urges Islamists in Bangladesh not to participate in the new government and instead to focus on intensifying efforts to establish complete Sharia rule in the country.
AQIS is a sub-set of the Islamist militant terror organisation Al-Qaeda which aims to fight the governments of Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Myanmar and Bangladesh to replace them with an Islamic caliphate in the Indian Subcontinent.
This statement released by the militant organisation reflects AQIS's ongoing strategy of exploiting political instability in South Asia to further its extremist agenda, underlining the group's persistent threat in the region.
The situation in Bangladesh remains delicate as the country navigates this volatile period, with Islamist groups seeking to capitalise on recent political developments.
