Adani Total Gas (ATGL), the city gas distribution company of the Adani Group, has launched a groundbreaking pilot project for blending of green hydrogen with natural gas.
As part of the project, it will employ the latest technologies to blend Green Hydrogen (GH2) with natural gas for over 4,000 residential and commercial customers in Ahmedabad.
Green Hydrogen is produced using electrolysis of water with electricity generated by renewable energy. Blending hydrogen with gas reduced carbon intensity in the burning gas without losing its heating capabilities.
Further, as per studies, an upto 8 per cent hydrogen blend can reduce emission by upto 4 per cent.
The project is expected to be commissioned in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2024-2025, and the percentage of green hydrogen will be gradually increased in the blend to upto 8 per cent or more, depending on regulatory approvals.
After successfully completing the pilot, hydrogen blended fuel will be supplied stepwise to larger parts of the city and other license areas of AGTL.
The company co-promoted by Adani Group and TotalEnergies, is developing city gas distribution (CGD) networks to supply piped natural gas (PNG) to industrial, commercial and domestic customers and compressed natural gas (CNG) to the transport sector.
It holds the mandate for gas distribution across 38 Geographical Areas (GAs), with 19 overseen by ATGL and the rest by Indian Oil-Adani Gas Private Limited (IOAGPL), a 50:50 joint venture between ATGL and Indian Oil Corporation Limited.
Significantly, GAIL (India) Ltd, the largest gas distributor in the country, has initiated a pioneering project in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, introducing the first-of-its-kind blending of hydrogen into the natural gas system.
The company is blending Hydrogen with natural gas on an experimental basis in Indore in its CGD network to test its success, and aims to escalate blending ratios with due permission based on the test results.
