The Maharashtra government has approved a revised financial plan of Rs 2,954 crore, including the updated financial participation of the central government — for the metro line from Swargate to Katraj.

This 5.464 km fully underground corridor is an extension of Pune Metro’s purple line — a 17.5 km north-south route from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to Swargate, which currently includes 14 stations. The extension will add three more stations to the network.

Earlier, in 2022, the project received cabinet approval with an estimated cost of Rs 3,668.04 crore and was sent for review by the Public Investment Board (PIB).

On 18 January 2024, the PIB recommended a grant model for the centre in the project, but on 5 August 2024, the central government revised its financial participation plan, opting to participate through equity shares, according to an HT report.

The financial plan includes a Rs 300.63 crore subsidy from the central government and a Rs 97.83 crore contribution from the state government.

Both governments will also provide interest-free loans — Rs 115.52 crore each for 50 per cent of the Central Government Tax (CGST), while the state government will contribute Rs 206.58 crore for State Government Taxes and Duties (SGST).

Additionally, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will allocate Rs 181.21 crore for land acquisition, rehabilitation, and interest during construction.

The Pune Metro rail project includes two corridors — the north-south Purple line and the east-west Aqua line, covering a total length of 33.1 km with 30 stations.

Currently, Pune Metro is progressing towards completing the approved phase-1 purple line on the Civil Court to Swargate stretch.

The line is operational from Pimpri (PCMC) to Civil Court, and the pending 3.7 km segment from Civil Court to Swargate is expected to be inaugurated soon.
