Assam Chief Minister and BJP leader Sarbananda Sonowal and state health and finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been leading from their constituncies as the counting for the state assembly elections is currenlty underway.
Sonowal is contesting from Majuli seat while Sarma is fighting from Jalukbari constituency.
Meanwhile, opposition Congress' Legislative party leader Debabrata Saikia is trailing from Nazira constituency.
According to India Today report, BJP and its allies are leading in the early trends with 72 seats while Congress is trailing on 39 seats.
It should be noted that the polls for the assembly were held in the state in three phases.
The Sarbananda Sonowal - Himanta Biswa Sarma combine in Assam is seeking to retain power in Assam, with Himanta emerging as the tallest leader in the state, thereby positioning himself as a potential Chief Ministerial candidate. The BJP faces a tough fight from the combined forces of the Congress and Badruddin Ajmal led AIUDF.
