A proposal to extend the upcoming Nagpur Metro Phase-III corridor from Koradi to Khaparkheda has gathered traction, with local MLA Ashish Deshmukh urging Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MahaMetro) to consider the extension to meet the area’s growing commuter needs, reported Times of India.

Currently, the Phase-III line, part of Nagpur Metro’s expansion plan is designed to end at Koradi. However, Deshmukh has called for its continuation to Khaparkheda, a nearby industrial and residential hub that houses the state-run thermal power plant and several growing colonies.

He met MahaMetro managing director Shravan Hardikar last week to discuss the proposal and its feasibility.

Deshmukh said the extension would significantly ease daily travel between Nagpur, Koradi and Khaparkheda, areas that see heavy traffic, especially on the Mankapur flyover.

“Heavy traffic congestion and frequent accidents, especially on the Mankapur flyover, are proof of the urgent need for an alternative transit system,” he was quoted as saying.

“Additionally, the metro is a popular means of transport in Nagpur, and if brought to these areas, then it will be of great use to the locals.”

He added that suburbs such as Koradi, Mahadula and Parseoni are witnessing rapid residential growth.

“Extending the Metro line to Khaparkheda is not only viable but also essential for the future. It will save travel time, reduce fuel expenses, and provide an affordable and safe travel option for local commuters,” he was quoted as saying.

MahaMetro chief Shravan Hardikar confirmed that the proposal is being studied as part of the city’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP).

“Khaparkheda is an important stretch, and we plan to prioritise its development given the promising ridership potential. A detailed feasibility analysis is underway,” he said.

The proposed 11.5 km Sitabuldi–Koradi corridor, estimated to cost around Rs 3,500 crore, is expected to carry nearly 1.5 lakh passengers daily by 2054.
