The direction comes in the wake of Drugs Technical Advisory Board's decision to ensure generic drugs are available more widely.
The Indian Medical Association has also supported the move while some sections in medical community has expressed reservations regarding quality standard of generics.
The Narendra Modi government has been pushing for wider use of generic drugs as they are cheaper than branded drugs.
