The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has circulated a tender to hire specialists in horticulture and landscape to decorate the medians and provide a green remodeling to the first phase of the metro’s extension corridor in northern part of the city.

“Plants such as ficus, palm cycas are being considered. Light-loving and shade-loving plant species are being proposed too,” officials were quoted by the New Indian Express. The phase-1 corridor is 9 km long with an elevation of 6.6 km whereas it goes 2.4 km to the underground.

Husk along with coco peat and vermicompost will be combined with the sand in the medians to ensure good health of the plants. Moreover, the contractor will have to bear the cost of guaranteeing sufficient water for the plants over the course of next two years.

The officials will examine this project and possibly expand the plan to other medians too. They are also pondering upon the possibility of incorporating vertical gardens as the construction of the project nears its completion.
