Footage of a woman holding “Free Kashmir” placard at a protest against JNU violence held at Mumbai’s Gateway of India has gone viral on social media.

The woman in question has since then been identified as a certain Mehak Mirza Prabhu who is said to be a stage artist.
This poster drew sharp criticism from various quarters including former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis who posted a scathing tweet on this issue.
Protest is for what exactly?

Why slogans of âFree Kashmirâ?
How can we tolerate such separatist elements in Mumbai?
âFree Kashmirâ slogans by Azadi gang at 2km from CMO?
Uddhav ji are you going to tolerate this Free Kashmir Anti India campaign right under your nose???@OfficeofUT https://t.co/zkWRjxuTqA
Incidentally, senior Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut who until recently had a reputation of taking a nationalist stance, was quoted as trying to defend the poster.
Sanjay Raut,Shiv Sena: I read in newspaper that those who held 'free Kashmir' banner clarified that they want to be free of restrictions on internet services, mobile services and other issues. Also, if anyone talks of freedom of Kashmir from India then it will not be tolerated. pic.twitter.com/Mi03MkQ3JU

Raut claimed that the poster was not about Aazadi but about lifting communication restrictions in the union territory. He also added that “if anyone talks of freedom of Kashmir from India then it will not be tolerated”.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
