According to the first-ever rankings released by Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), which evaluated various states based on their policy environment for startups, Gujarat has come out on top.
In an attempt to ‘foster competitiveness and to propel the (27) States and (three) Union Territories to work proactively towards promotion of their Startup ecosystem,’ the NDA government launched the States Startup Ranking Framework in February 2018.
In the maiden exercise, while Gujarat was declared as the ‘Best Performer,’ Karnataka, Kerala, Odisha, and Rajasthan, were included in the ‘Top Performers’ category. Surprisingly, states like Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu and UTs like Delhi were termed as ‘Emerging States.’ This was the only category above the ‘Beginners’ grouping.
“The ranking exercise has been an extremely enriching and educating experience for all the participants and has demonstrated the huge impact that can be made when Centre and States work together as Team India. These results are as much a recognition of the leading states as they are a celebration of efforts made by all the states for helping innovation and entrepreneurship across the length and breadth of the country,” said Ramesh Abhishek, Secretary, DIPP.
PM Modi launched the flagship programmed of the NDA government, ‘Startup India,’ in 2015 to build a strong ecosystem for nurturing innovation and startups in the country. It has also floated ‘Standup India’ that aims to promote entrepreneurship among marginalised sections of the society.
