Latest report from the Union Internationale des Transports Publics (UITP) ranked the Delhi Metro as the seventh busiest metro according to the number of passengers, reports Metro Rail News.

The report states that an estimated 178.9 million people used the Delhi Metro in 2017, making it the seventh busiest metro rail network in the world.

Delhi Metro was not listed in the top 10 in the previous report of UITP in 2015. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), as per the data provided on its website, was ranked tenth in the world on the basis of March 2017 statistics.

Delhi Metro has claimed its place in the list by displacing the Paris Metro. The metro was ranked fifteenth by the end of the previous year based on the length of the metro rail network.

The introduction of services on new lines this year has further propelled Delhi Metro up in the list. The UITP statistics also revealed that Seven out of the top 10 busiest metro networks are located in Asia.

The Tokyo metro is ranked first with an estimated 346.3 million passengers availing their services, followed by the Moscow Metro (236.9 million) and the Shanghai Metro (204.4 million).

The Beijing Metro is ahead of its Indian counterpart with 198.8 million commuters, followed by Seoul Metro with 188.5 million passengers and the New York City Metro with 180.6 million metro riders.

The construction work on the Delhi metro started in 1998 and its first section, the red line, was opened in 2002.
