Member of Parliament from Kasaragod, Kerala, P Karunakaran's demand for the inclusion of Tulu in the Eight Schedule of The Constitution in the ongoing Parliament session on 12 December (Wednesday) was lauded on social media and he was called a ‘hero.’
On the other hand, Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje came under blatant criticism for not discussing the issue in the Parliament.
“Tulu is a Dravidian language spoken mainly in the Southwest region of Karnataka and also in the Kasaragod district of Kerala. The Tulu-speaking region is often referred to as Tulu Nadu. The native speakers of Tulu are also called as Tuluva,” quoted Karunakaran as reported by Deccan Herald.
He also cited the 2011 census report where it is stated that there are 1,846,427 native Tulu speakers in India and Tulu is spoken by three to five million people across the world.
DYFI State President, Muneer Katipalla, in his Facebook post, took a jibe on the MPs from Dakshina Kannada and said that Kerala MP had raised the issue of Tulu while the MPs from Udupi and Dakshina Kannada have failed to do so in the Parliament.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
