Hours after Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced in the Union Budget 2018-19 that the government will set up two defence industrial production corridors, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced that the first corridor will be set up between Chennai and Bengaluru.
In his budget speech, Jaitley had also stated that the government would bring in an industry friendly Defence Production Policy with the aim of promoting domestic production by the public and private sectors and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
Now that the (budget) announcement has been made for defence corridor, the first one will be built starting at Tamil Nadu, linking Chennai and Bengaluru. Announcement for the second corridor will soon be made.Nirmala Sitharaman
The government has opened the doors for private investment in defence production including allowing foreign direct investment (FDI).
Last month, Sitharaman had asked the Government of Tamil Nadu to plan out a defence corridor connecting Kattupalli port, Chennai, Tiruchirapalli, Coimbatore, Hosur and Bengaluru.

The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
