Australian cricket legend Ricky Ponting apparently turned down the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) offer to become the head coach of the Indian cricket team.
Ponting is currently carrying out the same role for Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
However, the reason behind his refusal to accept the BCCI’s proposal is unknown yet, News18 reports. Ponting has been associated with the Delhi franchise since 2018 and even led them to a runners-up finish in IPL 2020.
Just last week, his team bowed out of the 14th season of the league by losing to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the second qualifier in the playoffs. Delhi had finished atop the points table in the league stages and a large part of their success in the last few years is attributed to Ponting’s leadership and coaching abilities.
On the other hand, the BCCI has reportedly appointed Rahul Dravid to take over as the head coach of the team after Ravi Shastri steps down from the responsibility following the upcoming World T20 in the UAE.
“Rahul was the only ideal candidate. The challenge was making him agree to it. Truth be told, there’s no other choice,” a source in the know of developments was quoted in a report by News18.
