In a shocking development, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) has filed an FIR against a Shiv Sena leader and Kalyan-based businessman, who recently purchased a Rolls Royce car worth Rs 8 crore, for electricity theft of around Rs 35,000, reports India Today.
As per reports, a complaint was filed by officials from the MSEDCL and a case was registered against Sanjay Gaikwad at the Kolsewadi police station in Kalyan.
In March this year, MSEDCL team conducted an inspection at one of Gaikwad's construction sites and found power theft there. Following this, a bill of Rs 34,840 was sent to Gaikwad and a penalty of Rs 15,000 was imposed on him.
However, even after three months, Gaikwad failed to pay up the total amount and the MSEDCL filed an FIR against him.
The Shiv Sena leader, however, denied his involvement in any power theft and added that MSEDCL had filed a false complaint against him. “If I have stolen electricity, then why were my meters at the sites not removed?” he asked.
On Monday (12 July), Gaikwad paid a sum of Rs 49,840, which included Rs 34,840 for "power theft" and Rs 15,000 as "settlement amount" to the power operator.
