Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president, K Annamalai has announced that the party would conduct protests across the state on 20 May against the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government for its failure to curb illicit liquor.

He added that women would be at the forefront of the protest.

The hooch tragedy has claimed 22 lives so far, with several still in hospital, undergoing treatment.

The police have held more than 1500 people, filed over 1800 cases and seized around 19000 litres of spurious liquor in the past few days.

The opposition has said that such a large network could not have operated without the knowledge of officials.

Annamalai has demanded the dismissal of Minister for Excise and Prohibition, V Senthil Balaji and Minority Affairs Minister Gingee Masthan, saying that Masthan is close to one of the alleged suppliers of the spurious liquor in Villupuram.
