Two Madras High Court lawyers have been slammed for making a mockery of a Covid-19 donation drive by donating a sum of Re 1 for indigent lawyers suffering due to the ongoing lockdown, Times of India has reported.
These lawyers made this donation to the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry bar council which had initiated a donation drive to help indigent lawyers under its jurisdiction whose livelihood has been adversely impacted due to the lockdown.
The sum of Re 1 was transferred to the bank account of the Bar Council by the lawyers via an e-transfer mode. Two colleagues of these lawyers similarly donated Rs 10 each.
The Bar Council after taking note of these donations has decided to sarcastically reward them with a Certificate of Appreciation.
As per Bar Council member R C Paul Kanagaraj who helped initiate the donation drive, such donations are a mockery of the whole exercise.
Other members of the legal fraternity though have generously contributed towards the fund, with senior lawyers donating up to Rs 5 lakh per person. The Bar Council has raised Rs 60 lakh so far with the help of 216 donors.
