Union Minister Smriti Irani on Friday (6 December) lashed out at the opposition parties after they kept interrupting her speech in the backdrop of Hyderabad police’s encounter, ANI has reported.
After the opposition MPs kept creating a ruckus, an angry Irani commented that, “the fact that you shout here today means you do not want a woman to stand up and talk about issues”.
She then accused the legislators of staying mum when rape was being used as a political weapon, “You were quiet when in West Bengal panchayat polls, rape was used as a political weapon, you were quiet then”.
It was later reported that two Congress MPs namely Dean Kuriakose and TN Prathapan charged towards Irani while she was speaking in the lower house.
As a result, Meenakshi Lekhi who was in the chair instructed Congress’ Lok Sabha leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury to get his MPs to apologise.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
