Ahmedabad’s British-era Kharicut Canal, once an irrigation channel but now reduced to a waste dump, is undergoing a major transformation.

By 2027, it will be redeveloped into a six-lane mobility corridor, linking the northern and southern parts of the city while also facilitating the flow of excess rainwater through a new stormwater pipeline, Indian Express reported.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel had allocated Rs 1,003 crore to Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation on 11 March for the execution of the second phase of the Kharicut Canal Redevelopment Project.

This phase covers 28 km of the 80-km-long canal within AMC’s jurisdiction.

Originating from Raipur village in Ahmedabad district, the canal flows to Chandola Lake, which is situated close to the expressway linking Ahmedabad and Vadodara.

The project aims to address the Ahmedabad’s flooding problems, which have been worsened by unregulated construction around the canal, as well as the health hazards posed by industrial effluents being discharged into it.

Unplanned construction around the Kharicut Canal has worsened Ahmedabad’s flooding problem, while unchecked industrial effluents have created significant health hazards.

The first phase of the redevelopment project, launched in 2022, is covering a length of 12.75 km.

Out of the total project cost of Rs 1,338 crore, Rs 1,192 crore is dedicated to civil and construction work of the canal, with the remaining funds earmarked for beautification and other purposes. So far, over Rs 700 crore has already been spent, IE reported.

The redevelopment plan includes stormwater drains on both sides of the new corridor to direct excess rainwater into the canal below.

Out of the total 85 km of the Kharicut canal, 28 km stretch falls under AMC’s jurisdiction.

According to a senior AMC official cited in the IE report, the upcoming six-lane road will serve as a crucial transit corridor linking Ahmedabad’s north, east, and south zones, significantly easing traffic congestion in the area.

Moreover, the cleanup effort will eliminate waste accumulation and mosquito infestations, improving public health.

The canal’s redesign will also boost its water-carrying capacity by around 42 per cent, ensuring faster drainage from flood-prone low-lying areas in the city’s northern, eastern, and southern zones.
