Bhopal is a step closer to joining India’s growing list of cities with metro connectivity, as Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav announced that the priority corridor of the Bhopal Metro will become operational by October this year, PTI reported.

On 27 May, Yadav personally inspected progress on the project, taking a test ride aboard a three‑coach train from Subhash Nagar station to AIIMS and then from AIIMS to Rani Kamalapati station. During the ride, he reviewed onboard facilities and station amenities.

“The Bhopal metro project is progressing rapidly. A few incomplete works will be completed within one and a half to two months. The government is working swiftly to give a gift of metro train service to people by October,” the Chief Minister told reporters, while noting that Indore’s newly launched metro has already drawn a positive public response.

The initial priority stretch spans 7 km, connecting eight elevated stations between Subhash Nagar and AIIMS. Key features of the service will include lifts at all stations and provisions for passengers with physical disabilities.

The Bhopal Metro, a flagship project worth around Rs 6,941 crore, will eventually operate with 27 train sets. Of these, eight have already been delivered.

A major milestone was recently achieved when the project secured its first certification following evaluation by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), Lucknow.

The final green light from the Commissioner of Railway Safety will pave the way for the commercial launch.
