Breon Peace, Biden-Appointed US Attorney Behind Adani Indictment, Resigns Ahead Of Trump Taking Office

Breon Peace, the US attorney behind the fraud US indictment charge against the Adani Group, has announced his resignation effective 10 January.

In a statement on Wednesday (19 December), the 50-year-old East New York district attorney described his tenure as "the honour of a lifetime."

Peace, who was appointed by US President Joe Biden in 2021, will leave office just days before President-elect Donald Trump assumes office on 20 January.

Carolyn Pokorny, the First Assistant US Attorney, will serve as acting US Attorney after his exit.

In November, Peace's office indicted Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani and other officials of the conglomerate, for allegedly defrauding US investors by concealing a bribery scheme aimed at securing Indian government contracts.

The Adani Group has firmly denied all allegations.

The Adani Group criticised what it called a wrong understanding of the US indictment, which it claimed led to "incorrect" reports about bribery charges, arguing no evidence had been presented regarding alleged bribe exchanges.

The company noted that its directors—Gautam Adani, Sagar Adani, and Vneet Jaain—have not been charged with bribery.

In a statement, the group said, "The ill-founded US action and reckless false reporting have led to significant repercussions for the Indian conglomerate, such as international project cancellations, financial market impact, and sudden examination from strategic partners, investors, and the public".

According to the Adani Group, the US government's report pertains to a single contract of Adani Green Energy, accounting for around 10 per cent of the subsidiary's operations.

None of the Adani Group's 11 public companies is implicated or accused of any wrongdoing, the group's Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Jugeshinder Singh said.
