In a move to make toll operations more transparent and commuter-friendly, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has asked all its field offices to install clear, multilingual boards at fee plazas explaining the availability, rates, and procedures of the Local Monthly Pass and Annual Pass.

The initiative, rolled out under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), is designed to ensure that highway users know about concessional passes that can make regular travel cheaper and easier.

The display boards will appear at key spots — including toll approaches, customer service areas, and entry or exit points — in English, Hindi, and regional languages.

NHAI has given its field offices 30 days to complete installation and ensure that the signage remains visible both day and night.

In addition, the same information will be made available on the Rajmargyatra mobile app and relevant NHAI project websites for those who prefer digital access.

Frequent local commuters can apply for a Local Monthly Pass, which allows unlimited trips for private vehicles within a 20-kilometre radius of a toll plaza. Applicants must submit an Aadhaar card, vehicle registration certificate, and proof of residence for verification before receiving the pass at the helpdesk.

For those who travel long distances regularly, the Annual Pass offers one year or up to 200 crossings — whichever comes first — for a one-time fee of Rs 3,000.

It can be purchased via the Rajmargyatra App and is activated digitally on the vehicle’s FASTag.

The pass covers about 1,150 toll plazas across national highways and expressways in India.

"The prominent display of information regarding availability of ‘Local Monthly Pass’ and the ‘Annual Pass’ at the fee plazas underscores NHAI’s commitment to improving user experience, making travel more economical and enhancing transparency in toll operations across the country," the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said in a statement.
