Bus Carrying Indian Tourists Plunges Into River In Nepal: At least 14 Dead, 16 Injured

Rescuers recovered 14 bodies from the Marsyangdi River in Nepal’s Tanahun district on Friday (23 August) after a passenger bus bearing Uttar Pradesh registration number veered off the road and plunged into the river while en route to Kathmandu.

Kaksi district police chief Mohan Thapa said that 14 bodies were pulled from the Marsyangdi River, while 16 people have been rescued and rushed to the hospital for treatment, Indian Express reported.

According to officials, 11 others remain missing as the Nepal army, police, and Armed Police Force continue their search efforts.

A rescue team, aided by an army helicopter, has been dispatched to the spot in coordination with the Indian embassy in Kathmandu.

The police said that they are in the process of verifying the names of the tourists which were obtained from hotel records.

According to eyewitnesses, the bus, which was coming from Pokhara, plunged into the Marsyangdi River near the Abu Khairani area but did not completely submerge into the swollen river.

The bus, bearing the Uttar Pradesh registration number U P 54 7623, was reportedly carrying 41 passengers.

It had reached Pokhara on Wednesday before departing for Kathmandu on Friday morning.

Uttar Pradesh relief commissioner Naveen Kumar G S stated that efforts are underway to determine if anyone from the state was involved in the accident.

He also said that the sub-divisional magistrate of Maharajganj will travel to Nepal, with the additional district magistrate overseeing the coordination of rescue operations.
