The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has taken a key step toward expanding the city’s metro network with the submission of a detailed project report (DPR) for a proposed 21.76-kilometer metro extension from Koyambedu to Pattabiram (Outer Ring Road).
The project, estimated to cost Rs 9,744 crore, aims to enhance connectivity across several key areas in Chennai.
The DPR was formally handed over on Friday (21 Feburary) by CMRL MD M A Siddique to Tamil Nadu government's additional chief secretary for special intiatives K Gopal at the state Secretariat in Chennai.
The proposed extension will begin at Koyambedu Metro Station, passing through Padi Pudhu Nagar, Mugappair, Ambattur, Thirumullaivoyal, and Avadi before terminating at Pattabiram (Outer Ring Road).
The corridor will feature 19 elevated stations and is expected to improve access to major transport hubs, including Ambattur Estate Terminus, Avadi Railway Station, Avadi Bus Terminus, and the Outer Ring Road.
In an effort to streamline costs and accelerate construction, the metro line will be integrated with highway flyovers at three key locations:
Ambattur Estate Bus Depot Junction
Near Dunlop
In front of Avadi Bus Stand
The proposal is part of Chennai Metro’s broader effort to expand its metro network and address growing transit demands.
