Travel between Chennai and Tirupati will become faster as the four-laning of an 18-km greenfield highway between Thiruninravur and Tiruvallur is set for completion by September, The New Indian Express reported.
The project is expected to cut travel time by 30 to 45 minutes.
The new highway will connect the Tiruvallur Bypass at Thirupachur with the Veppampattu Bypass at Thiruninravur on the Chennai–Tirupati Highway, passing through Thaneerkulam, Thozhur, and Sevvapet.
As of 1 August, 15 km out of the 18 km stretch was complete.
Once operational, the access-controlled, fully fenced national highway with service roads on both sides will allow motorists to bypass the congested Tiruvallur town, Veppampattu, and the narrow Thiruninravur–Tiruvallur section, where the road narrows to two lanes at several points.
The project, launched in 2022 at a cost of Rs 304 crore, is part of a larger plan to make the entire 62-km Thiruninravur–Tirupati stretch a four-lane access-controlled road. It also includes provisions to expand the Thiruninravur–Tiruvallur bypass to six lanes in the future without acquiring more land.
In parallel, a Rs 750 crore project to four-lane the 44-km Tiruvallur–Tamil Nadu–Andhra border section began last year, with 12 per cent completed so far.
Currently, the Chennai–Tirupati Highway has four lanes for the 22 km stretch from Padi to Thiruninravur, but widening to six lanes has been delayed due to land acquisition issues.
