The first session of the eighth Legislative Assembly of Delhi will commence on Monday (24 February) with newly elected members taking oath at 11 am, according to a bulletin issued by the House secretariat.

The three-day session will include the election of the speaker and deputy speaker. Additionally, 14 pending reports from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) on the performance of the previous AAP government will be presented.

According to BJP leaders cited in a PTI report, the party has nominated senior MLAs Vijender Gupta and Mohan Singh Bisht as its candidates for the posts of speaker and deputy speaker, respectively.

As per the Assembly’s list of business, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta will propose Vijender Gupta’s name for the speaker’s post, while Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa will second the motion on 24 February.

With the BJP holding a majority of 48 MLAs in the 70-member Assembly, both Gupta and Bisht are expected to secure their respective posts.

Meanwhile, AAP, which has 22 MLAs, has yet to announce its leader of opposition. Former Chief Minister Atishi and Delhi unit convener Gopal Rai are reportedly the top contenders for the position.

On 25 February, the second day of the session, Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena will address the Assembly.

The session will also include the tabling of the 14 CAG reports, followed by a discussion on the LG’s address.

The discussion on the motion of thanks will continue on the third day — 27 February.

The election of deputy speaker will be held the same day, the bulletin said.

On Friday, the Assembly secretariat notified an order from the LG appointing BJP MLA Arvinder Singh Lovely as the pro-tem speaker.

The pro-tem speaker will perform the duties of the Office of the Speaker from the start of the House meeting until a new speaker is elected.
