Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has signed a long-term agreement with Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) to provide operation and maintenance services for three corridors of the Chennai Metro Phase-II project.
The agreement, signed on 2 July, covers three key corridors of Chennai Metro Phase-II: Corridor-3 from Madhavaram Milk Colony to Siruseri SIPCOT-II (Indigo Line), Corridor-4 from Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass (Orange Line), and Corridor-5 from Madhavaram Milk Colony to Sholinganallur (Red Line).
It also includes CMRL's maintenance depots at Madhavaram, Poonamallee, and Semmancheri.
The contract, awarded to DMRC through a global competiting bidding process on 2 April 2025, gives it the responsibility to run and maintain around 118 km of Chennai Metro lines and 112 stations for the next 15 years.
These include train operations, station management, depot functions and the Operational Control Centre, ensuring global-standards.
The first part of Chennai Metro Phase-II is expected to start operating by December 2025, with the entire network gradually opening up by December 2028.
This is DMRC’s second big win through international bidding, the first being Mumbai Metro Line-3 in 2023.
With over 20 years of experience, DMRC is now expanding its metro operations business across India and is also looking for opportunities in other countries.
