On Monday (4 November), the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced that the date for by-elections in 14 assembly constituencies has been rescheduled from 13 November to 20 November.

The affected constituencies are located in Kerala, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh. Initially, the commission had set November 13 for by-elections in 48 assembly seats and two Lok Sabha constituencies.

After receiving representations from various recognised national and state political parties (including BJP, INC, BSP, RLD) and some social organisations, the date change was announced.

The ECI considered large-scale social, cultural and religious engagements on that day due to Tulsi Vivahand decided the change as it could cause inconvenience to large number of people.

Various logistic issues and possibiltiy of reduced voters participating during the poll were considered by the ECI for making the decision. Nine constituencies of UP, four of Punjab and one of Kerala have a changed voting date now.
