Prime Minister Narendra Modi today (26 August) touched upon the challenges faced by Indian automobile manufacturers to procure rare earth magnets due to the restrictions imposed by China, as per a report by Times of India.

Addressing an event at Maruti Suzuki’s Hansalpur plant in Gujarat, where he flagged off an e-VITARA, the company's first EV model for the global market, he said, “The Indian government is also aware of the shortage of rare earth magnets for the auto industry. To increase the capacity of the industry in this direction, we have also launched the National Critical Minerals Mission. Under this, more exploration missions will be conducted, at different places in the country and critical minerals will be discovered.”

Calling the moment historic, he added, “In this fervour of Ganesh Utsav, today a new chapter is being added to India's 'Make in India' journey. This is a big leap towards our goal of Make in India, Make for the World.”

He stressed upon India’s strengths: “India has the power of Democracy. India has the advantage of Demography. We also have a very large pool of Skilled Workforce. Therefore, this creates a Win-Win Situation for every Partner of ours.”

The Prime Minister praised Maruti Suzuki’s transformation and stated that it was a symbol of the friendship between India and Japan. He recalled allotting land for the plant in 2012, when he was the chief minister of Gujarat, saying the facility was now “entering its teenage years.”
