Vipin Bhati, the prime accused in the Greater Noida dowry-murder case, was injured in a police encounter on Sunday as he tried to escape custody, reported The Times Of India.
According to police, Vipin tried to snatch a pistol from an officer while being taken to recover an inflammable liquid bottle he had allegedly purchased.
He reportedly fled from custody near Sirsa Chauraha despite repeated warnings. Police opened fire, and a bullet struck his leg.
He was taken to hospital under tight security.
Bhati is accused of brutally assaulting and setting his wife ablaze at their Greater Noida house.
Vipin, his brother Rohit, mother Daya, father Satveer, and his sister have been booked under sections 103(1) (murder), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt) and 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The FIR was based on a complaint filed by Nikki’s sister Kanchan, who is married to Rohit.
While Kanchan initially took Nikki to Noida’s Fortis Hospital, she was referred to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi.
Police said she died on her way to Safdarjung Hospital on 21 August.
In an interview from his hospital bed, Vipin showed no remorse, claiming, “I have no regrets. It's not my fault. She died on her own (‘apne aap mari hai’).”
He added, “Miya-biwi me ladai hoti rehti hai (husband and wife often have fights, it is very common),” reported Mint.
Earlier, Nikki’s father, Bhikari Singh Payla, had demanded swift justice.
He told NDTV: “They are killers, they should be shot, their home razed. My daughter was bringing up her son by running a parlour. They tortured her. The whole family was involved in the conspiracy, and they killed my daughter.”
