India has carried out proportionate military action against Pakistani targets after Islamabad attempted to escalate hostilities with drone and missile attacks on multiple Indian cities during the night of 7–8 May, the Defence Ministry said on Thursday (8 May).

According to a statement by the Ministry of Defence, the Pakistani military launched coordinated strikes on military installations in northern and western India—including cities such as Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Chandigarh, and Bhuj — using drones and missiles.

These attacks were thwarted by India’s Integrated Counter-UAS Grid and Air Defence systems, the ministry said, adding that "debris of these attacks is now being recovered from a number of locations that prove the Pakistani attacks".

In response, Indian armed forces on Thursday (8 May) targeted Air Defence Radars and systems at a number of locations in Pakistan, according to the ministry.

The ministry said that the Indian response has been in the same domain with same intensity as Pakistan.

"It has been reliably learnt that an Air Defence system at Lahore has been neutralised," the ministry said.

The ministry further said that Pakistan has increased the intensity of its unprovoked firing across the Line of Control using Mortars and heavy calibre Artillery in areas in Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, Poonch, Mendhar and Rajouri sectors in Jammu and Kashmir.

"Sixteen innocent lives have been lost, including three women and five children, due to Pakistani firing," the ministry said, adding that India was "compelled" to respond to bring mortar and artillery fire from Pakistan to a halt.

Despite the ongoing hostilities, India reiterated that its armed forces remain committed to non-escalation—provided this principle is reciprocated by the Pakistani military.
