Six candidates including actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam founder Kamal Haasan were elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha on Thursday (12 June), The Hindu reported.

The results, announced by the Tamil Nadu Assembly Secretariat, came as no surprise, with nominations matching the number of vacant seats and no withdrawals by the deadline.

The elected members include DMK-backed Kamal Haasan, incumbent MP and senior advocate P Wilson, poet and former Tamil Official Language Commission chairperson Salma, and veteran DMK leader S R Sivalingam.

From the AIADMK, I S Inbadurai and former Speaker M Dhanapal were also elected unopposed.

Returning Officer B Subramaniyam stated that a total of 13 nominations had been filed, of which six were found valid after scrutiny.

As no withdrawals were submitted by the final date, these six were declared elected unopposed.

This election marks MNM's entry into the Upper House and signals the end of the current Rajya Sabha term for representatives from the MDMK and PMK.

Of the six elected, only P Wilson has previously served in the Rajya Sabha.

The DMK continues to hold 10 seats in the Rajya Sabha, with the AIADMK increasing its tally by one.

Tamil Nadu's 18 seats in the Upper House are now represented by members from the DMK, AIADMK, Congress, and TMC (Moopanar).
