A proposal to extend Kochi Water Metro’s service from Kakkanad to Kadambrayar in Ernakulam has been recommended in the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for developing Kadambrayar as a tourism destination, the Hindu reported.
The plan aims to offer a sustainable, efficient, and eco-friendly transit option for tourists and Infopark professionals.
The DPR proposes building a well-designed, environmentally friendly jetty to support the service. It recommends either a floating or fixed reinforced cement concrete jetty, depending on water conditions.
The jetty would also feature a covered waiting area with seating, safety railings, signage, and lighting.
Additional provisions include information display about the water metro schedules, easy pedestrian access from the riverfront promenade and integrated CCTV and Wi-Fi zones for safety and digital access.
“We have already discussed the proposal with the Kochi Metro Rail Limited, and the outcome has been, by and large, positive. A more detailed discussion will have to be held,” Kunnathunadu MLA PV Sreenijin was quoted as saying by The Hindu.
He added that specially designed smaller boats would be required for the route, due to the limited vertical clearance under the Brahmapuram Bridge.
The Rs 3.5 crore project, already granted administrative sanction under the chief minister’s Nava Kerala Sadas, will move to the tendering stage after receiving technical clearance.
However, the DPR outlines a broader three-phase development plan for Kadambrayar, estimated at Rs 5.5 crores.
The first phase, costing Rs 2 crores, will focus on widening the walkway, adding lighting, parking, and setting up a café, to be completed within six months.
The second phase proposes an amphitheatre, gym, boat jetty, and parking, also at Rs 2 crores over six months. The final phase involves beautification and additional amenities worth Rs 1.5 crores.
