The Mizoram government is considering the construction of a ropeway and cable-car system to connect Aizawl, Sairang railway station, and Lengpui, where the state's only airport is located.
The initiative aims to enhance tourism and improve public transport, according to an official statement released on Wednesday (15 January)
Chief Minister Lalduhoma chaired a meeting to discuss the feasibility of the Aizawl-Sairang-Lengpui ropeway project.
The proposed system would serve both as a tourism development initiative and a vital connectivity link between the state capital and Lengpui airport.
The project is being evaluated for execution either through the state's tourism department or under the Aizawl Sustainable Urban Transport Project (ASUTP).
The ASUTP is currently being implemented by the Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) department through an externally aided programme, the statement noted.
The meeting saw the participation of key officials, including Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation Minister K Sapdanga, Tourism Minister Lalrinpuii, adviser to the Chief Minister (finance) TBC Lalvenchhunga, and other senior officials.
Discussions centred on the potential benefits of the ropeway project, particularly its role in promoting tourism and providing a sustainable transport alternative.
It was highlighted that the project aligns with the state’s broader goals of enhancing urban transport infrastructure while leveraging its natural beauty to attract more visitors.
The government is expected to further evaluate the technical and financial feasibility of the project before making a final decision on its implementation.
