Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Saturday (22 February) criticised the global Left, saying it paints conservatives like her, Trump and Modi as a threat to democracy.

She made this statement while addressing the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in the United States.

Addressing the event via video link, Meloni pointed out that when Bill Clinton and Tony Blair formed a global left-liberal network in the 1990s, they were celebrated as statesmen.

“Today, when [US President Donald] Trump, Meloni, [Argentina President Javier] Milei or maybe [Prime Minister Narendra] Modi talk, they are called a threat to democracy. This is the Left’s double standard, but we are used to it, and the good news is people no longer believe in their lies, despite all the mud they throw at us. Citizens keep voting for us,” she added, Indian Express reported.

Meloni asserted that conservatives are expanding their influence across Europe, making the Left uneasy.

She claimed that Trump’s victory had heightened their frustration, turning it into hysteria—not only because conservatives are winning but because they are now coordinating efforts globally.

Her remarks echoed the broader messaging of the Global Right, which had convened at the annual CPAC gathering in the United States.

US President Donald Trump also addressed the conference held at the National Harbour in Maryland, just outside Washington DC.

“We’re going to forge a new and lasting political majority that will drive American politics for generations to come," Trump said.

During the event, Trump met with conservative Polish President Andrzej Duda against the backdrop of rising tensions in Europe over Russia’s war in Ukraine.

After taking the stage, he acknowledged both Duda and Argentine President Javier Milei.

He praised Duda as “a fantastic man and a great friend of mine,” adding, “You must be doing something right, hanging out with Trump.”

Referring to Milei, he remarked that the Argentine leader was “a MAGA guy, too—Make Argentina Great Again.”
