The Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) has granted clearance for the crucial connectivity between Metro Line 4 and 4A and the proposed metro car depot at Mogharpada in Thane.
The authority has recommended the project to the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) for final approval, Times of India reported.
The proposal by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) includes the construction of a 25 metre wide elevated approach road with a metro spur line linking the proposed depot to an existing 40 metre wide road located around 200 metres away.
To complete this link, 20 piers will be built across a small creeklet falling within the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) area. The MCZMA had earlier made it clear that no mangroves were to be cut for the project.
The 32.32 km-long Metro Line 4 connects Wadala to Kasarvadavli, while the 2.7 km-long Line 4A extends the corridor to Gaimukh.
The MMRDA has clarified that the Mogharpada depot lies outside the CRZ zone, and the approach road will ensure operational connectivity between the main line and the depot without disturbing ecologically sensitive areas.
In the same meeting, the MCZMA also recommended the Dharamtar Jetty expansion by JSW Dharamtar Port Private Limited (JSWDPPL) to the Centre. Originally approved in 2015 for a total length of 1,750 metres, the jetty currently has 1,050 metres built and nine operational berths.
The proposed extension will enable it to reach full capacity and handle up to 54 million tonnes of cargo annually, supporting the growth of a nearby steel plant.
The recommendation comes with strict conditions, including maintaining a 50-metre buffer zone, ensuring no debris dumping, and preventing any construction within mangrove areas.
