Nagpur Metro’s Phase 2 expansion is set to take a significant step forward with the proposed 1.3 km extension of the Kamptee corridor likely to be formally presented to Maharashtra’s chief secretary next month, reported Times of India.

The critical proposal, already submitted to the state government in April, will be reviewed in a high-level briefing by MahaMetro officials involving the chief secretary and other key departments before final state clearance.

This planned extension aims to take the Metro line beyond the current Automotive Square station to Kanhan village, incorporating a 500 metre steel viaduct over the Kanhan River.

Once completed, the total network length under Phase 2 will exceed 45 km, with the number of stations on the Kamptee route increasing from 12 to 13.

Describing the importance of the addition, a senior MahaMetro official noted, "The extension is a strategic addition that will enhance last-mile connectivity for thousands of residents in the Kanhan area. It's important that all technical and planning aspects are clearly conveyed to the decision-makers at this stage."

Estimated to cost around Rs 300 crore, the extension is seen as pivotal to improving access for residents in northern Nagpur and easing traffic load on arterial roads.

Following the anticipated green light from the state, the proposal will be sent to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) for central approval expected within a few months.

Meanwhile, ongoing work across Phase 2 corridors is progressing well. Stations such as Lok Vihar, Pili Nadi, and Kamptee Police Station are under various stages of development, with Lok Vihar targeted for commissioning by November 2025.

Land acquisition is over 90 per cent complete across the entire phase.
