NASA will repotedly lay off more than 2,000 senior-ranking employees following budget cuts under US President Donald Trump.
About 2,145 staff members in GS-13 to GS-15 positions—senior-level government ranks—are set to leave as the agency pushes to reduce its workforce, reported Politico.
To encourage departures, NASA has offered early retirement, buyouts, and deferred resignations.
"NASA remains committed to our mission as we work within a more prioritised budget," NASA spokesperson Bethany Stevens said in an emailed statement to Reuters.
In recent months, Trump-era budget proposals and looming layoffs have disrupted NASA’s workforce of around 18,000, threatening to cancel dozens of science programmes.
Meanwhile, the agency still lacks a permanent administrator.
President Donald Trump has appointed Sean Duffy, the secretary of Transportation, to a dual role as interim leader of NASA.
Trump's nominee for NASA administrator, billionaire private astronaut and Musk ally Jared Isaacman, lost his chance to lead the agency after the White House unexpectedly withdrew his nomination last month.
The move came amid a growing rift between Musk and the president, making Isaacman an early casualty of the conflict.
