NIA Files First Supplementary Chargesheet Against 26/11 Mumbai Attack Accused Tahawwur Rana In Pan-India Terror Conspiracy Case

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Wednesday (9 July) filed a first supplementary chargesheet against Tahawwur Hussain Rana, who was extradited from the United States earlier this year for his alleged involvement in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.

Rana, a Pakistani-origin businessman and close associate of Lashkar-e-Taiba operative David Coleman Headley, arrived in India on 10 April following his extradition, nearly 16 years after his initial arrest.

Authorities allege that he assisted Headley in the surveillance missions crucial to planning the 2008 attacks and provided logistical support to facilitate the deadly operation, which claimed 166 lives across Mumbai.

“The NIA has filed the first supplementary chargesheet before the Hon’ble NIA Special Court in Patiala House against Rana... The case pertains to a criminal conspiracy hatched by Headley, Rana and other members of LeT and HUJI to carry out terrorist attacks in different parts of India,” the NIA statement read.

The supplementary chargesheet submitted on Wednesday details evidence gathered since Rana’s extradition, including documentation supporting his transfer from US custody and fresh material unearthed during further investigations.

Additionally, the NIA confirmed it has complied with a Patiala House Court directive dated 6 June, submitting a compliance report under Section 207 of the Criminal Procedure Code to ensure that documents linked to the original chargesheet filed in 2011 are provided to the defence.

The Special Court also extended the judicial custody of Rana until 13 August.
