Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Delhi, VK Saxena, has initiated a coordinated effort with the Delhi Police, Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), and other relevant authorities to combat the growing drug abuse problem in the national capital.

This ambitious plan aims to eradicate drug trafficking and addiction, with the goal of making Delhi drug-free by 2027. The initiative focuses on a strategic, multi-agency approach to tackle the issue head-on, with specific targets and action plans to curtail the drug menace.

On Sunday (1 December), Delhi's Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for Crime, Bhisham Singh, unveiled the detailed blueprint for this operation, emphasising the formation of specialised task forces.

These teams will focus on high-risk areas known for drug trafficking and aim to dismantle drug networks. Singh highlighted that the plan will involve targeting drug peddlers directly and ensuring their arrest through coordinated efforts by law enforcement agencies.

The LG convened a high-level review meeting on 26 November, where various departments responsible for combating drug abuse came together. During the meeting, LG Saxena reiterated his determination to see Delhi drug-free by 2027. He instructed the involved agencies to prioritize this critical issue and work together to take effective action.

As part of this initiative, a significant anti-drug campaign will be launched in December 2024 as a pilot project. This campaign will be a high-intensity effort aimed at arresting drug peddlers, recovering illicit substances, and implementing strict measures in areas that are hotspots for drug-related activities.

It is an extension of the anti-drug campaign that was first introduced by Saxena in December 2023. The month-long campaign that began on 1 December 2024, is part of ongoing efforts to raise awareness and combat drug abuse.

Saxena has underscored that the issue of drug abuse is not just a health concern but also a national security threat. He has pointed out that drugs are being used to harm the younger generation of India and undermine the country’s future.
