External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday (3 September) positioned Germany as a “reliable partner” and stressed that “predictability today has a huge premium in global politics.”

After meeting German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul in New Delhi, he said global “economic volatility” created a “very powerful case” for India-EU and India-Germany to strengthen cooperation, reported The Indian Express.

Wadephul, on a two-day visit, echoed the sentiment “reliability, friendship and predictability in these times of uncertainty are invaluable,” he said.

He later met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who highlighted 25 years of strategic partnership and invited German Chancellor to India. Modi noted cooperation opportunities in “trade, technology, innovation, sustainability, manufacturing and mobility.”

Jaishankar underlined India-Germany trade worth nearly 50 billion euros last year and assured support for German companies.

“We would be prepared to give it special attention,” he said.

He welcomed Germany’s support on terrorism. “Minister Wadephul has himself been explicit about our right to defend our people against terrorist attacks,” he noted.

Wadephul reaffirmed, “When it comes to India defending itself against terrorism, Germany continues to be firmly at your side.”

The leaders discussed semiconductors, student mobility, defence trade, and the India-EU FTA. Jaishankar pressed for a “decisive conclusion,” while Wadephul predicted completion “in the coming months.”

On Ukraine, Wadephul urged India to push Russia toward peace talks.

“The only demand is that weapons fall silent,” he said.

He also called China both a partner and “systemic rival,” stressing the need to “defend our markets.”

Jaishankar confirmed progress in defence ties, semiconductor cooperation, and student exchanges, praising Indian contributions in Germany’s labour market.
