Pune Metro's long-awaited Khadki station on the Pimpri Chinchwad-Swargate corridor began operations on Saturday (21 June), Hindustan Times reported.
The new metro station is located near Khadki railway station and is expected to significantly boost multimodal transport options across the city, bringing relief to thousands of daily commuters.
Before the station was operational, trains on this corridor bypassed both Khadki and Range Hill stations, forcing passengers to travel directly from Shivajinagar to Bopodi.
Pune Metro operates along a 17.4 km stretch between Pimpri Chinchwad and Swargate, linking the twin cities of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad.
Out of the 14 stations on this corridor, 12 were functional, while Khadki and Range Hill remained non-operational until now, The Indian Express reported.
With the launch of Khadki station, this gap in service will be partially addressed.
Pune Metro expects the station to benefit residents from key localities including Khadki Bazar, Aundh, Range Hill Corner, Khadki Police Colony, and Mula Road.
Improved access to major destinations such as Pune University, Aundh IT Park, Ordnance Factory Hospital, Range Hills, and Aundh Road is also expected to ease congestion and offer a faster alternative to road travel.
“The inclusion of Khadki station further strengthens the public transport network connecting the twin cities of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. It will greatly benefit residents and workers in and around Khadki and Aundh,” Pune Metro Managing Director Shravan Hardikar was quoted by Hindustan Times as saying.
The project was expected to be completed by November 2024; however, the opening was delayed due to labour shortages and unfinished work, including staircase installation, lighting, painting, mechanical fittings, and aesthetic enhancements, officials added.
