Sector 5 Metro Station To Become Gurugram’s Key Transit Hub Linking Railway Station And Southern Peripheral Road: Report

The upcoming Sector 5 metro station in Gurugram is expected to become a key transit hub, connecting the city’s railway station with the Bhondsi and Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) corridors, the Hindustan Times reported, citing officials.

Proposed as a two-level interchange, the station will facilitate smooth transfers between metro lines, with one elevated and the other at a lower level, sharing a common platform to simplify connectivity.

Earlier, authorities had proposed a skywalk with escalators to link the metro station to the railway station.

However, the state government opted in November last year to replace it with a dedicated spur line for improved integration.

According to a senior official from the Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation (HMRTC), the Sector 5 station’s construction cost is “slightly on the higher side,” requiring approval from the Centre.

A supplementary Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being prepared for this purpose.

A Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) official said that civil work is progressing on the first-phase stretch from Millennium City Centre to Sector 9, while structural designs for stations along the Sector 9 to Cyber City corridor are being finalised in the second phase.

The HMRTC official said that the Sector 5 station took the longest time to finalise due to technical complexities.

The location posed multiple challenges, mainly because of narrow roads and the station’s distinctive design as a junction for two metro lines. Careful planning was necessary to ensure smooth construction and future operations.

She added that construction will only begin once the implementing agency for the Railway Station–Bhondsi corridor is finalised. Multiple agencies have submitted bids, and the selection process is expected to take another six to seven months.

Once operational, the Sector 5 station is expected to become a vital interchange, boosting metro connectivity across Gurugram and easing transfers between major corridors.
