Shil Phata–Ranjnoli Double-Decker Corridor Nears Reality; MMRDA To Float Tenders Soon: Report

The long-awaited double-decker corridor connecting Shil Phata and Ranjnoli is moving closer to fruition, with the Detailed Project Report (DPR) now finalised, The Times of India reported.

Designed to relieve severe traffic congestion, the project will also enhance metro connectivity across Kalyan, Bhiwandi, Thane, and Navi Mumbai.

During his visit to Durgadi temple in Kalyan on Monday, MP Shrikant Shinde announced that the MMRDA will soon float tenders for the ambitious 21-kilometre flyover.

Loksatta reported that the traffic congestion remains one of the biggest challenges in the Thane district, with almost every major city and arterial road caught in gridlock.

Areas such as Shilphata, Palava, Dombivli, and Kalyan regularly face severe bottlenecks.

Commuters travelling on the route from Katai to Ambernath are forced to navigate the choke points of Kalegaon, Khoni, Nevali, and Ambernath, adding to delays.

A heavy flow of vehicles moves daily from Shilphata, Navi Mumbai, and Dombivli towards Bhiwandi and Ranjnoli, while traffic in the opposite direction also clogs the same corridors. A journey that should take far less time often stretches to two to two-and-a-half hours, as commuters are forced to detour through Mumbai’s highways and multiple urban centres, resulting in wasted time, fuel, and effort.

Raising this concern, Kalyan MP Shrikant Shinde had urged the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to create a direct high-speed corridor in the region. Acting on this, the MMRDA initiated the planning process.

The authority has now floated tenders and begun reviewing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed flyover.

It is also in the process of appointing an expert advisory body to finalise the design and execution of the project, which is expected to bring much-needed relief to commuters in the Thane-Kalyan belt.
